Generator safety basics
Sizing is only one part of safe backup power. Set up and connection choices matter more than the calculator result.
Never operate a fuel-burning generator indoors, in a garage, on a porch, or near open windows. Use a listed transfer switch or interlock installed by a qualified electrician for home wiring, and verify actual device nameplates before buying equipment.
Before an outage
- Install working carbon monoxide alarms.
- Plan outdoor placement with exhaust pointed away from people and openings.
- Use outdoor-rated cords sized for the load and distance.
- Have transfer equipment installed by a qualified electrician if powering house circuits.
- Store fuel safely and follow the generator manual for refueling and maintenance.
